Location:

Burlington Station is situated 50 km north of Mt Surprise and 90 km from Mt Garnet. The property is dissected by the main Mt Surprise-Alamaden Road which gives good access for most of the year. Important business destinations include Cairns (260km), Mareeba (210km), Charters Towers,  Townsville & Hughenden (440km) to supply saleyards, meatworks, live export and grass fattening markets.  A major plus for the property is the Mt Garnet based, Stocklick Trading, for all cattle supplementary feed requirements.

 Area:   45,500 ha (112,385acres)

Tenure: Rolling Term Lease Lot 3 on TE24 PH 18/3280 Burlington Holding

Local Authority: Mareeba Shire Council

Country:

The prominent features of Burlington are …

  • The Lynd River – approx 8-10km single frontage, seasonal river, alluvial frontage soil and good grazing.
  • Fossilbrook Creek – approx 12km double frontage, springfed and big flow year-round, supplies water to homestead, fertile frontages and good grazing.
  • Saltwater Creek – approx 11km double frontage, springfed and big flow year-round, fertile frontages and good grazing.
  • Numerous seasonal creeks including Fulford, Dickson, Western, Nugget, Blackfellow, Racecourse, Road & Tommy Ck
  • Basalt soils – covering approximately 5000ha (12000ac) on the eastern side, supports heavy stands of Black Spear, Urachloa, Indian Couch and predominantly timbered with Bloodwood & Ironbark. Grader grass is present on the better country types.
  • Established legumes in a safe rainfall belt.
  • The majority of the property grows Stylos, Black Spear, White Spear, Urachloa, Kangaroo grasses and numerous native edible shrubs and is mostly timbered with Narrow-leaf and Silver-leaf Ironbark, Bloodwood, Ironwood, Box, Tea-tree and Wattle. The property is intersected by ranges and rocky outcrops with soil types being mainly decomposed granite, sandy soils, alluvial watercourse frontages and areas of red soil.

 Rainfall:

Burlington is in a reliable summer rainfall belt. Approx 790mm (31inches) pa.

Carrying Capacity:

The vendors deem the appropriate stocking rate to be 3,500 cows plus heifers at current development … … depending on season, supplementary feeding regime and overall herd management

practices. There is good coverage of Seca and Verano Stylo’s throughout the property and further production gains are expected as the percentage of Seca impacts on pasture nutrition.

Yards:

Burlington is serviced by three sets of cattle yards. In the centre of the property is Ruby Yards, to the west is Western Yards and to the east are the main yards located at the homestead.

 Comment:

Burlington Station will be a useful extension to the established family grazing enterprise. Used as a breeding enterprise to supply steers to another grower/fattening property Burlington can be a low-cost, simple operation in a welcoming grazing community. Crossbred type cattle will adapt quite well.
